250 Years of Independence, Centuries of Irish Heritage
Posted by anonymous on 29th Jun 2026
As the 4th of July approaches, people all over the United States are preparing to celebrate 250 years of independence, and at Aran Sweater Market, we’re celebrating the strong threads that reach across the Atlantic and connect many American citizens with their heritage in the Emerald Isle.
The deep connection between Ireland and the United States comes from our shared heritage, with Irish emigration to America beginning in the 17th century and increasing dramatically from 1715, when vast numbers of people were forced to flee famine in Ireland. The waves of immigrants from Ireland continued for many years, and children were often sent on the journey alone.
Bridget Donaghy was only thirteen years old in 1909, when she made the long and arduous journey to Philadelphia with her sisters. The children were sent by their father to live with their cousin in the United States, in search of a better life. It is hard to imagine the desperation that motivated families to bundle up their children to make the trip alone, dressing them in their cosy Aran sweaters, knitted with love and skill, to remind them of the homes they left behind.
Stepping onto a boat with only a few personal items to hold their precious memories, these intrepid travellers faced hardships at sea and on arrival in their new home country. Their clothing was a connection with family and memories, holding their Irish identity in every stitch. So many stories, woven into the fabric of the United States.
The timeless Aran Sweater is not only a symbol of resilience and warmth, it’s a connection with home and a foundational part of the story of the Irish diaspora in the US.
The warmth of Irish wool is part of what makes it so special, and the patterns knitted into Aran sweater and cardigan designs are unique and meaningful. Wool was a practical choice for clothing, and it was just as useful on board a ship to America as it was for the local fishermen carving a living on the rugged Aran Islands. Water resistant and warm, wearing Aran is like being wrapped in a hug, embraced by centuries of Irish craftsmanship and integrity.
As you celebrate with your pint of Guinness and join in parades and events in your local area on 4th July, take a moment to appreciate the heritage of your ancestors across the ocean.
Wearing our authentic Irish sweaters is a beautiful way to feel the connection with home, and our intricate designs celebrate the heritage of Irish identity all year round. Take a look at the incredible stitching patterns and the legends they hold to find your own little piece of Ireland.
Did you know that wool is naturally water resistant and can take on up to 30% of its weight in water before feeling wet?
